If the cooking bug in you still persists, you can cook professionally in hotels and restaurants and earn quite well. To be a professional chef, there are long-term degree and diploma courses and educational institutes for cooking such as hotel management, culinary arts school, baking and pastry school, etc. Although they may be more expensive than most courses due to being an extremely specialized field, in the long run, they become an investment if met with success in your career.

The next section talks about the various places to learn cooking professionally in more detail.

Where to Learn Cooking Professionally?

As mentioned earlier, there are places to learn cooking professionally. Some of them are as follows:

Hotel management institutions:

With the rise of tourism in various parts of India and abroad, the hospitality sector is increasingly growing as well. Hence, a lot of hotels are being built with the need of staff and manpower. For this, hotel management institutions are affiliated with hotels to provide employment to students there once their course gets completed. They not only teach how to cook dishes from various cuisines but also the administrative aspects and operations to run a hotel and other hospitality institutions as well. Some of the top-ranking hotel management institutes in India are the Mumbai, Bangalore, and Chennai branches of the Institute of Hotel Management (IHM), Bharati Vidyapeeth (Deemed to be University) Institute of Hotel Management and Catering Technology in Pune, SRM Institute of Hotel Management in Chennai, Welcomgroup Graduate School of Hotel Administration in Manipalrespectively.

Culinary Arts School:

In these institutions, people are taught about food production and service which includes food preparation, cooking skills, presentation skills, serving skills, and so on. Their curriculum mostly revolves around the operations of a restaurant or catering company, unlike hotel management where the administrative aspect of hotels is focused about. Some of the culinary arts schools in India are the Academy of Pastry and Culinary Arts in Mumbai, the Culinary Academy of India in Telangana, and the International Institute of Culinary Arts in Pune respectively.

Pastry/ Baking Schools:

From the name itself, these institutes teach about the skills to prepare Western desserts and confectionery especially pastries. This is a much more specialized course as a result compared to culinary schools. Although these institutes are more popular abroad, there are places in India that offer this specialization as well. Some of these are Lavonne Academy of Baking Science and Pastry Arts in Bangalore, White Lotus School of Cake Decoration Arts, and Lotus School of Cake Decoration Arts in Pune, School for European Pastry in Mumbai, and Foodybreaks Academy in Goa respectively.

Despite the growing numbers and popularity of such courses and institutes, very few people opt for such courses. The reasons for this are not only about the high fees of such courses but also about the lack of awareness about the job options in this field and the risk-averse attitude of many people when it comes to careers and would prefer to go for more stable careers. Nevertheless, this doesn’t deter people from joining such institutes and pursue their dreams as chefs.

Time Taken For Completion

Like any other course/specialization, there are eligibility requirements for joining a hotel management institute, culinary school or pastry school. A person should have completed their 10+2 exams from any board with a certain percentage which would depend from institute to institute. After meeting such requirements, you would be enrolled in a hotel management course or culinary school.

People often think that such courses take time to complete due to the extensive work required in it. However, most courses offered in hotel management is either a bachelor’s degree usually of three years with some offering a four years course on the same. There are diplomas offered in this field which are usually of three years as well.

For culinary schools, it starts with a one-year diploma to a three-year full-fledged course while for pastry schools, diplomas start from 6 months to 18 months depending on what is being offered.

Unlike a bachelor’s degree in these courses, a post-graduate degree in these fields is hardly there because being a professional course, once the studies are over people directly start working and become the part of the workforce instead of studying further.
